Tomorrow is Cambridge City Council Elections. The Liberal Democrat team in Queen Edith’s have been working hard all year round for local residents and it has been good to meet more of you over the last few weeks.

Amanda is a great candidate with plenty of fresh ideas and ways to continue to develop local Lib Dem policy, e.g. improving cycling facilities, and extending the 20mph zone. She will shortly be consulting residents about new play equipment in Holbrook Park, having helped with the upgrading of Nightingale Avenue and Gunhild Parks.

The polls are open from 7am – 10pm on 3rd May and the polling stations are St John’s Hills Road and St James Wulfstan Way. You don’t need your polling card but if you have forgotten which polling station to go to or would like a lift, to avoid the rain, please contact us via this website, emails will be monitored, or telephone 01223 249787

Queen Edith’s residents may like to sign this pettion. The following is a press release and the link is below:

Cambridge Liberal Democrat MP Julian Huppert has today launched a petition to stop any plans to create a snoopers charter. This petition follows a public letter in The Independent from 17 Lib Dem MPs, lead by Julian Huppert. The letter called for openness from the Government about controversial proposals to monitor emails, telephone calls and social media. The new petition demands a guarantee from the Government that no-one will be allowed to read the content of internet communications, phone calls or texts without a warrant. The petition also calls for “substantially stronger safeguards for civil liberties”.

Julian said “Local Liberal Democrats will always fight for the basic right of every single Cambridge resident to have a private life. I’ve already helped force the Government to publish the new bill in draft form, so it can be scrutinized and amended. This petition, launched by Liberal Democrats across the City, will push the Government to create new safeguards to protect against state surveillance. Lib Dems in Cambridge will do whatever it takes to protect our fundamental civil liberties.”

The petition can be signed at: http://cam.lib.dm/No2NetSnooping

The following message has been sent by the E-Cops service: “From Sunday (April 1), Cambridgeshire police can only be contacted on 101 for all non-emergency calls. The old 0345 number will be switched off and a recorded message will tell people to call 101. The old number has remained in use alongside 101 for the past year to allow people time to get used to the new number. For the first time, everyone calling the police for non-emergency matters will know exactly how much it will cost them and it will be the same no matter what time of day or the duration of the call. The number change is part of a national scheme to make 101 the single non-emergency number in England and Wales. The change has been introduced so residents will have one, easy-to-remember way to contact local police, wherever they are. The system has been designed to recognise where the caller is dialling from and connect them with the local police service. If a caller does not want to speak to their local force they will be given the option to be connected to different one.

The number change does not affect the way that calls are handled and non-emergency calls will continue 24 hours a day, seven days a week. People should continue to call 999 when an immediate response is needed, for example if a crime is happening, someone suspected of a crime is nearby, or someone is in danger.”

Apparently calls will cost 15p however long they last and a Cambridge number is also available – 01223 358966, but for a long call it might not be any cheaper. With some phone pricing packages the old 0345 number was effectively free so it seems a pity there will now be a charge and it remains to be seen how effective the service is.

Once again there have been several burglaries in Queen Edith’s and neighbouring wards. Below is a message from the police. If you would like a chance to talk to them about these incidents and to help set the police priorities for the next few months come to South Area Committee on Monday 5 March, 7.30p.m at Cherry Hinton Village Hall.

“Following a number of daytime dwelling burglaries in the Queen Edith’s area, we are urging residents to be vigilant and cautious of their home security. The majority of these recent burglaries have been where the suspect(s) is entering the properties through ground floor doors and windows in the daytime and using garden tools to force their way in.

We urge residents to check that all windows and doors are secure when you leave your property- even if you are going out for a short time. Please take simple precautions such as keeping garden tools secure in a locked garage or shed, setting a light timer in the evening, and avoid leaving valuable items such as laptops, cash and car keys in view of windows and doors.

Home security is the best way to reduce your chances of being burgled. Burglar alarms that are visible and good home lighting (both interior and exterior) in the right place can put burglars off from targeting your home.

Use timers for lights and radios if you need to be away from home overnight or when you are on holiday to create the impression that someone is home. Fences that surround the back of your house may make this area more secure- We also recommend planting shrubs with prickly thorns.

We recommend using ‘Immobilise’ to register you valuable property. Using ‘Immobilise’ enables the police to check found stolen items against the register, giving us a greater chance of returning stolen property to its rightful owner. You can register items at www.immobilise.com.
If you would like any further information on securing your home, you can contact our crime reduction department on 101
If you see anyone acting suspiciously or any other suspicious activity, or have any information you can make us aware by calling us on 101. Alternatively, you can report information anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111. If you witness a burglary in progress, or in an emergency, call us on 999.
Kind regards,
Cambridge City South NPT”
